FOUR DAYS!!! We have 4 short days before we depart. And if you are like me, you're really thinking that it's more like 3 1/2 since today is over half already. Still the only thing I can really say is "wow". So little time and so much left to do. I have things I want to wrap up at work so that I feel I'm not leaving things hanging. At least I have started packing. Things keep migrating to my dining room table and then I start putting them where they belong.
I just checked the weather and the 5-day forecast for Perth has highs on Wednesday and Thursday hitting over 100F. I won't be sorry to leave the wintertime behind me in South Carolina, but it'll be a shock to the system to have temperatures jumping up at least 50 degrees like that. The bright side is that taking summer clothes means more space in my suitcase! haha
It's so nice to know that my friends here in SC are concerned about my welfare on this trip. So far I have been told the following things:
1) I could get bitten by something poisonous and die.
2) I could get bitten by something poisonous, become paralyzed and then eaten by a crocodile.
3) Australia is home to the most poisonous spider in the world (never was told which one it is though!).
4) Don't get eaten by a shark!
And a couple of others not worth mentioning. *sigh* Yes, it's good to have friends! haha I've actually been told the spider thing by about 5 people in the past 2 weeks, so apparently there was some nature show on about this that I missed. But I could do without the spiders period. Ick.
I hope the rest of the team will be checking in before we leave, but if not, I can assure you I will be taking them all to task to ensure we get regular updates posted here so everyone can keep track of out great adventure.

Shannon -- Have a wonderful trip; I'm very jealous. You have a great leader. A little arachnophobia will ensure that you shake your shoes each morning before putting them on...:-) Are you related to Shawn Mewborn by any chance? Best wishes for a safe trip. Ellen Moore, Rotary Club of Five Points
Team Australia…..
You are about the embark on the trip of a lifetime. Believe me I know, I was on the Wales team just a few months ago. I know it’s a little late, but below are a few words of wisdom that I hope will come in handy……
-Don’t worry about trying to blog every single day! Sometimes you won’t have internet access, some days you’ll just be too tired, then of course, there will be the days that you have technical difficulties and no matter how many times you try, the blog will fail and the pictures won’t upload. (believe me it happened to me several times in the middle of the night!) Don’t let this stress you out! Also, not everyone in the group will want to blog and that’s fine. As long as updates are sent every now and then, that’s all that your friends, family and Rotarians expect. No need to stress about it and expect everyone to post – it just won’t happen.
-Once we arrived in Wales, I changed the time and date of the blog to the time in Wales…..that way the readers back home in the US knew when we posted. It was interesting to see that some were posted at 1:00 in the morning, 7:00 am or even randomly in the afternoon. Just something to think about.
-I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but if you haven’t yet……take advantage of the time you’re given to powernap! They were essential on our trip. (I’m a master powernapper!) Obviously the best time to do it is while in the car headed to the next location. I have a feeling you guys have a lot of ground to cover in West Australia, so don’t be shy to sleep in the car. We also told some of the drivers that it was inevitable that we’d fall asleep. They understand.
-Try and keep a journal. I only kept it up the first week and a few random days. However, some people on our team were able to do it daily and some even carried their journals with them. The better journal you keep, the less likely it all will be a blur when you look back at it.
-Photos….we shared all pictures. (This is sort of too late to give you much advice on so I’m hoping you guys have already talked about this.) When we returned we each put together CD’s with all of our pictures. We had close to 5,000 pictures from the group!!! This also helped because you will get sick of taking pictures and it’s nice to know that others in the group are taking pictures. Most of us took memory sticks to download pictures during the trip. We took a universal card reader so we could upload each person’s pictures onto the group laptop as needed or onto our host’s computers.
-Lastly….enjoy every single day to the best of your abilities. No doubt you will be tired, sick of smiling and answering the same questions, but remember why you were chosen and represent our state well. We know you will!
Sorry for the long post. Have a blast! I look forward to following your trip and seeing you all at the district conference in Hilton Head.
Happy travels,
Betsy Reves

Quite a flight ahead of you. Think about a portable DVD player and a dozen movies. Try for an aisle seat. If possible, avoid people with digestive tract problems. I only speak from experience. We will send prayerful thoughts your way from Rotary Club of Florence West.
If your hosts are anything like the Wales GSE team’s host were in October, they wont let you get close enough for anything to harm you. Tell your friends you’ll be supervised at all times.
I know you guys are getting all kinds of advice, but I just want to offer a few pointers from someone who recently spent five weeks away from her 10-year-old daughter and boyfriend of a year.
To team members; don't waste time worrying about things. Put your trust in your hosts and "go with the flow." Sleep in the car and eat when you're served because for the next few weeks, you not going to have any control over where you go or what you do. Try to be positive no matter what and don’t forget that your fellow team members are home sick too, even if they don’t admit it.
To family members who are being left behind; please try to be supportive of your world travelers. Encour-age them every chance you get and realize that they are doing this in the hopes of truly enlightening them-selves and others and in the end, making the world a better place. Send as many e-mails and post as much to the blog as possible! All news from home is good news when you’re home sick and lonely.
Now, good luck, have fun and I’ll be watching for updates. –Adrel Langley
Yay! As a blogger with my own personal blog, I love to see us getting comments.
Ellen, yes, I am related to Shawn. He's my favorite brother. Of course, he's my *only* brother too! haha
Besty and Adrel! I look forward to seeing you both again in Hilton Head next month. I'm a big blogger, so I'm pushing the team to try and get updates in whenever we can, but if we can't for a few days, so be it. Thanks so much for the great tips. I kept meaning to get a memory stick and might have to grab one tomorrow before I hit the airport. Still so much to do and no so very little time!
David, I'm with you on the aisle seat thing. I get claustrophobic if I sit in the middle of the row, so hopefully that'll work out for us all or at least we can swap seats.
Thanks everyone for reading and commenting!
Shannon
To the Australian GSE Team,
As other previous team members have said, ""Enjoy the moment and Go with the flow" as you are getting ready to experience an unbelievable 5 weeks with a different culture and from what it sounds like a different type of climate. We look forward to hearing about all your wonderful experiences and places and people that that you will go and meet. Best of luck with your flight and have the time of your life...Rick Melton Wales GSE Team Leader
The team left from the Columbia Airport on Thursday afternoon. I will try to enter some pictures of their departure. They are off to a great adventure.
Bill Clowney
GSE Co-chairman
I'm really looking forward to seeing your daily postings and enjoying your adventures. One of the best highlights of my day was reading the Wales team postings and I will have my calendar set to check yours daily.
Have a great trip and we'll see everyone in Hilton Head.
